ABOUT JAMIE
Different rooms. Same purpose.
Understanding changes things.
Cedric “Jamie” Rutland, MD, looks at medicine from more than one side — as a physician, teacher, advisor, communicator and policy leader. Different perspectives. One common goal: a healthier tomorrow.
PHYSICIAN. TEACHER. LISTENER.
Good medicine starts with a conversation.
Understanding disease begins with understanding the person living with it. That means asking better questions, listening to the answers, looking beyond a single test result, and taking the time to explain not just what is happening, but why.
Better conversations lead to better health.
“Medicine isn’t just about answers.
It’s about the right questions.”
— DR. J RUTLAND
A CAREER BUILT ACROSS MEDICINE.
Different perspectives. A broader impact.
Medicine does not exist within a single lane. His work spans clinical medicine, public health, life sciences, education and media — each informing the other, and all driven by the same belief: understanding changes things.
As a triple board-certified physician, he specializes in pulmonary and critical care medicine and serves as CEO and Medical Director of West Coast Lung and Rutland LLC. His work extends beyond the clinic into medical education and consulting, public health and environmental policy through his service on the South Coast Air Quality Management District Board, and conversations about health and science through The Health Exchange podcast.
Together, these roles have given him a front-row view of health and disease from multiple perspectives—not only on paper, but in the lives of the people experiencing it.
Different rooms.
Same curiosity.

BEYOND THE WHITE COAT
Still curious.
Jamie may spend his days talking about cellular signaling, pulmonary disease, healthcare policy and emerging therapeutics — but curiosity doesn’t stop when the conversation leaves medicine.
As a husband and father, Jamie has also experienced healthcare from the other side—supporting the people he loves through their own health challenges. Those experiences have deepened his understanding of what it means to live alongside illness, not simply treat it.
Because understanding medicine has always started with something much simpler:
Being interested in people.
HOW HE THINKS ABOUT MEDICINE
A different way to think about disease
The Sentinel Approach reflects Jamie’s belief that disease is best understood across its entire trajectory — not simply at the moment a diagnosis is made or a crisis occurs.
From early or unexplained symptoms to established and advanced disease, greater understanding creates the opportunity for more informed decisions at every stage.
What
happens next
still matters.
SAME PURPOSE.
Understanding changes things.
